Building Multiplicative Thinking
Students struggling in mathematical problem solving may be using inefficient counting strategies or less efficient additive strategies rather than multiplicative strategies. How do we support them in developing more effective strategies? Activities will be shared that allow students to go beyond the memorization of basic multiplication and division facts and develop the ability to work flexibly with the concepts and strategies of multiplication and division.

Math Talks in the Elementary Classroom
Math Talks involve a daily conversation (5 to 15 minutes) around mental mathematics. They allow students to make decisions about choosing effective and efficient strategies, to clarify their own thinking, to learn from their peers, and to investigate mathematical relationships. In this session, we will look at: what Math Talks will look like at different grade levels, how to use models to promote thinking, and how to design purposeful talks to promote a variety of computation strategies.
