Today, partly due to increased urbanization, over-scheduling of children, the lure of technology, and parental/societal fears, children are experiencing significantly less direct contact with the natural world.  Research is finding that there are multiple benefits if children can spend more time in green spaces (such as parks, gardens, and forested areas).  Besides developing greater ecological sensitivity in children, time spent in outdoor green spaces can decrease the symptoms of stress and anxiety, boost immune function, improve cognitive performance, lower rates of depression, and decrease the symptoms of ADHD. As children in “developed” nations become increasingly disconnected from the natural world, it is critical to ensure that direct experience with nature is integrated into school curricula; both for the well being of today’s children, and also for the world upon which they depend.  This presentation deals with two aspects which must be considered: the need to develop green spaces at Canadian schools, and the synergistic re-focussing of and support for teachers so they will take their students outside.
